Why should I join a community group?
We are made in the image of a self-giving, relational God, and so growth into Christ’s likeness happens when we engage in mutually life-giving relationships. Moreover, as the body of Christ—the church—we are called to cultivate and practice the love of Jesus together, in community. If Atlanta is going to be better off because Trinity exists, it will not simply happen because we goto church, but rather because we practice beingthe church together where we live, work, and play, helping each other become the kinds of people who manifest the hospitality and healing presence of God in our neighborhoods. Community groups are the structure we provide at Trinity to help folks live into this value of being the church.
What happens in a community group?
In a community group men and women gather to hang out, pray for one another, care for one another, and discuss the previous Sunday’s sermon and text with an eye towards practical application. Sometimes we share meals together and invite our neighbors to join. In other words, we work out together what it looks like to live and love like Jesus, and we do this ultimately for the sake of others.
How do I decide which community group to visit?
Unless you’re planning to attend one of the few affinity groups, location is the most important thing to consider in choosing a community group, because we’re hoping to facilitate close community and effective mission. We also want folks to care about where they live, and who they live next to. Thus, we encourage you to join the group closest to your home. This may mean hanging out with folks who aren’t just like you, choosing to lean into something that is a bit uncomfortable at times. But the ultimate aim of a community group is not comfort; rather, our hope is that a group of dissimilar people would gather around a perfect God, learn to love one another with Jesus as their example and the Holy Spirit as their encourager, and be empowered to invite others into this good Story.
What if the closest community group gathers on a night I’m unavailable?
If you have scheduling conflicts that keep you from attending the community group closest to you, we would encourage you to choose the next closest group.
What if I work far from home, and it’s just easier to attend a group close to where I work?
If the distance between work and home makes it difficult to attend the group closest to your home, it’s okay to find a group close to work. We would just encourage you to invest in that group, its people, and the neighborhood.
What do I need to do before attending a community group?
On the list of groups, select the group closest to you and you can either select to ask the group leader a question (by clicking “contact”) or you can select to join the group. In both cases, you will have an opportunity to ask any questions you may have. One of the group leaders will respond with details about the group including location.
