Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the season of Lent. It’s the day the Church will gather around the world and be invited to enter into the “wilderness” for forty days as a time of preparation for the coming of Easter. Lent is not so much an invitation to wander, but a call to acknowledge that we do. And to begin to resist the forces, appetites, and habits that keep us moving in circles rather than making the progress toward freedom we say we want.
